FoolProof ID Verification: what it checks and what it keeps
FoolProof ID Verification (version 1.1.0) reads the barcode on the back of a license, checks the front against it, and records the result; pictures are checked in memory and thrown away within seconds, and nothing biometric is kept.
Steps
- Open Admin → New Sale settings and find ID verification.
- For each place an ID is checked (online account creation, the delivery door, the register, counter pickup), choose Block, Flag for review or Off.
- A store that holds a delivery license can't switch the door check Off; it can be Block or Flag for review.
- The online selfie choice appears once FoolProof has switched selfie checks on.
- Every check is listed on ID Checks with its result; ABC can see the same records in the Regulator Portal.
Good to know
- Version 1.1.0, dated 2026-10-30. Questions: [email protected].
- How it works: The phone guides the person to take the pictures; it decides nothing. FoolProof's server reads every picture itself and signs the result.
- How it works: Pictures are checked in memory and discarded within seconds. They are never written to disk, a database or storage. Nothing biometric is kept.
- How it works: Each check is pass, fail or skip. A skip (for example a state we have not yet measured real cards for) never counts against the person and is recorded as 'uncalibrated' or 'not checked'.
- How it works: The result is two bands, pass / review / fail: one for the license ('real license') and, online only, one for 'same person'. A person (the driver or clerk) still confirms who is in front of them.
- How it works: If the checking service is unavailable, the door falls back to the barcode and the driver's confirmation and the record says 'not checked'.
- Where it runs: Online account creation. back barcode, front, selfie with consent.
- Where it runs: Delivery door check. back barcode, front, the driver's own confirmation.
- Where it runs: Register. back barcode (front optional, store setting).
- Where it runs: Counter pickup hand-off. back barcode (front optional, store setting).
- Check: Barcode is built like a real license. The scanned barcode's header, issuer number, license number shape, dates and validity match how the issuing state builds them.
- Check: Front matches the barcode. Name, date of birth, license number and expiry read off the FRONT of the card agree with the barcode on the back.
- Check: Clear picture. The front is sharp, not washed out by glare, and fills enough of the frame. A poor picture is a retake, never a failure.
- Check: One card in one session. The front and the back were captured in one continuous scan session, from the same card in front of the camera.
- Check: Not a photo of a screen. No screen-grid (moire) pattern in the picture.
- Check: Not a flat print. The shine on the card moves as the card is tilted, as a laminated card's does.
- Check: Layout matches the state's card. The card's shape and the position of the photo match the issuing state's card.
- Check: Faint second photo matches. The faint secondary portrait is the same face as the main photo.
- Check: Hologram changes colour. The hologram areas change colour as the card is tilted.
- Check: Fine print is crisp. The very small printed detail is as sharp as on a genuine card of that state.
- Check: Printed dates agree. Every printed copy of the date of birth agrees with the barcode.
- Check: Header is printed and red. 'ALABAMA' and 'DRIVER LICENSE' are read in the header, and the header is the red of a genuine Alabama card. Alabama only.
- Check: Gold star present. The gold star mark is in the top-left corner. Its absence is a review, never a fail: cards that are not REAL ID have none. Alabama only.
- Check: Fine-line background art is crisp. The fine-line capitol art behind the data block is as sharp as on a genuine card (part of the fine-print checks). Alabama only.
- Check: Pink band and Secretary line. The pink guilloche band along the bottom and the printed 'Secretary' line are present and crisp. Alabama only.
- Check: Field labels are where the template puts them. NO., CLASS, D.O.B., EXP, ISS, SEX, HT, WT, EYES and HAIR are found at their template positions (with room for how the card is held). Alabama only.
- Check: Issue-to-expiry span fits the rule. A standard Alabama license expires four years after it is issued (ALEA Driver License Manual, Nov 2024); one renewed late runs four years from the last expiration. Read from the barcode's own dates. Alabama only.
- Check: Sex, height and eye color match. Sex, height and eye color printed on the front agree with the barcode. Alabama only.
- Check: Seal hologram changes color. The seal hologram near the header changes color as the card is tilted. Alabama only; needs tilt scans of genuine cards to set, so it is not yet used.
- Check: State-outline hologram changes color. The Alabama outline over the portrait changes color as the card is tilted. Alabama only; not yet used, for the same reason.
- Check: Selfie matches the license photo. The selfie's face matches the photo on the license. Online account creation only, with the person's consent.
- Check: Selfie is a live face. The selfie looks like a live face, not a picture of one.
- Check: Head turn. The person turned their head the way they were asked.
- What the delivery record keeps: the recipient's name, date of birth and signature, the result of each check and who confirmed. Never kept: a picture of the ID (front, back or selfie). Never kept: a face template or any biometric measurement. Never kept: the full license number or the address (only the last four digits of the number and a one-way keyed hash are kept).
- It checks that a license is consistent and captured live. It does not examine holograms, ultraviolet features or microprint the way specialist hardware does, and it does not detect every fake. A person always confirms who is in front of them.
- What we do NOT check: ultraviolet (UV) security features; laser engraving; tactile (raised) features; microprint finer than a phone camera can resolve; the vertical layout some states use for holders under 21 (no official Alabama source states it, so it is not checked).
- Version 1.1.0 (2026-10-30): Alabama design checks, each named and explained: header, gold star, fine-line background, pink band and Secretary line, field label layout, issue-to-expiry span, sex/height/eye color match. Two hologram checks are named but not yet used (they need tilt scans).; Alabama's reference comes from one card (provisional): these checks only warn - a doubtful card goes to review, never refused on them.; A card the edges cannot find (busy background) is now found from its printed text; the name on an account is now set from the license once verified.
- Version 1.0.0 (2026-10-30): First release as FoolProof ID Verification.; Checks: barcode format, front matches barcode, clear picture, one card in one session.; Card-is-physical checks (screen, flat print, layout, faint second photo, hologram, fine print, printed dates), each used only for a state whose genuine cards have been measured.; Online account creation adds a consented selfie: face match, live face, head turn.; Records keep codes and statuses only, never a picture, a face template or a license value.
